If your website gets a handful of visitors a month and most of them are friends and relatives, you are not alone. Most small business owners we talk to in India have a decent site and very little traffic. The good news is that traffic is rarely a mystery. It usually comes down to a few basics done consistently.

1. Start with the questions your customers actually ask

Before writing anything, list ten questions a customer asks you on the phone or on WhatsApp. “How much does it cost?”, “Do you serve my area?”, “How long does it take?” Each one is a page or a blog post waiting to be written. People type these questions into Google and, more and more, into ChatGPT and Perplexity.

2. Make sure Google can find your site

Check that your site is verified in Google Search Console and that your sitemap is submitted. It takes about ten minutes and tells you which pages Google has actually indexed. If a page is not indexed, nobody can find it, however good it is.

3. Fix the pages that already get a few visitors

Search Console shows which pages get impressions. Pick the ones sitting on page two of Google and improve them: a clearer title, a direct answer in the first paragraph, a few more real examples. Improving an existing page is often faster than writing a new one.

4. Claim your local presence

If you serve customers in a particular city, your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere they appear. We cover this step by step in our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile.

5. Write answers, not essays

AI assistants and Google’s AI Overviews pull short, clear answers from pages. Put the answer at the top, then explain. Use headings that look like real questions. This one habit helps you in both normal search and AI search.

6. Link your pages together

Every blog post should point to the service it relates to, and every service page should point to a helpful post. It helps visitors move around and helps search engines understand how your site fits together.

7. Be patient, and measure monthly

Organic traffic builds slowly. Look at your numbers once a month, not every day. Note which pages gain visitors and write more like them.
