Business not showing up on Google? You are not alone, and it is rarely because your business is weak. Most of the time, Google (and now ChatGPT and Perplexity) simply has too few signals to trust and recommend you. This guide covers the five real reasons, and what to fix first.

Arjun had been running his HR consulting firm in Hyderabad for four years. Good clients. Referral business. A steady pipeline, until it slowed down.
He asked a friend how she found her last consultant. She said, “I just Googled it.”
He went home and Googled “HR consultant Hyderabad.” His firm did not appear. Not on page one. Not on page two. Not anywhere he could find.
He had assumed that having a website meant being findable. It does not.
If you have had that same moment, searching for your own business and coming up empty, this post is for you. A business not showing up on Google is fixable, and the first fixes are free.

A Business Not Showing Up on Google Is Now Two Problems, Not One
In 2024, not showing up on Google was one problem. In 2026, it is two.
Potential clients are not only typing into Google anymore. They are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s own AI Overviews for recommendations. If you are invisible on traditional search and invisible to AI assistants, you are missing two separate streams of business.
This guide covers both. Reasons 1 to 4 are about Google Search and Maps. Reason 5 is about AI search, which we explain in more depth in our guide to Google AI Overviews for Indian businesses.
Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Missing or Incomplete
This is the number one reason Indian businesses do not appear in local Google searches. It is also the most common cause of a local business not showing up on Google Maps.
When someone searches “HR consultant Hyderabad” or “AI training company near me,” Google shows a map and a list of local businesses before it shows any website. That list comes from your Google Business Profile (GBP), not from your website.
If you have not claimed your listing, you do not appear in that list. If you have claimed it but left it half filled, you appear but rank poorly.
Fix it:
- Go to business.google.com and claim your listing
- Fill every field: business name, category, description, address, phone, website and hours
- Add at least 10 photos
- Respond to every review, even old ones
- Post an update at least once a month
This single fix can move a business not showing up on Google Maps from invisible to visible in local searches within days. Voice assistants pull from the same listings, which we covered in our voice search guide for Indian businesses. Follow Google’s Business Profile guidelines so your listing does not get suspended.
Reason 2: Your Website Has No SEO Foundation
A website that Google cannot read is a website Google will not rank. That is the most common technical reason we see for a business not showing up on Google.
Most Indian business websites, especially those built quickly on website builders, have three problems:
No title tags or meta descriptions. These are the text Google reads to understand what each page is about. Without them, Google guesses. It usually guesses wrong.
No keywords in the content. If your homepage says “We deliver excellence and innovation,” Google does not know what you sell. If it says “We offer HR consulting services for mid-sized companies in Hyderabad,” Google knows exactly where to place you.
No internal linking. If your service pages are not linked from your homepage and blog posts, Google may never find them.
Fix it:
- Add a clear, keyword-rich title tag to every page, especially your homepage and service pages
- Write page descriptions that mention your service and city
- Use plain language that describes what you actually do
- Type site:yourwebsite.com into Google to confirm your pages are indexed
- On WordPress, check Settings, then Reading, and make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked
Google’s own SEO starter guide explains these basics in plain English.
Reason 3: Nobody Is Linking to Your Website
Google ranks websites partly on how many other reputable websites link to them. This is often called domain authority, and for most Indian small businesses it is close to zero.
No backlinks means low authority, which means low ranking, however good your website is. For a business not showing up on Google despite a solid website, backlinks are usually the missing piece.
Fix it:
- Get listed on free business directories: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Clutch and GoodFirms
- Write a guest article for an industry publication (YourStory, Inc42, or your industry association’s newsletter)
- Ask existing clients to mention you on their website or LinkedIn
One quality backlink from a high-authority site can lift your ranking more than months of other SEO work. It is often the missing step for a business not showing up on Google for service searches.
Reason 4: Your Website Is Too New
A new business not showing up on Google for the first few months is normal. Google takes time to trust new websites. A site launched in the last 6 to 12 months will almost always rank poorly, regardless of quality. This is often called the “Google sandbox” effect.
Fix it:
- Keep publishing useful content consistently. Even one blog post a month helps
- Build backlinks steadily over time
- Do not panic and rebuild the website. Consistency beats restarts
Reason 5: You’re Not Showing Up on AI Search Either
This is the newer problem, and most businesses do not even know it exists. A business not showing up on Google and on AI assistants usually has the same root cause: too few signals outside its own website.
When someone asks ChatGPT to “recommend an HR consultant in Hyderabad” or asks Perplexity “who are the best AI trainers in Delhi,” the AI does not simply search Google. It pulls from its own training data plus real-time web sources, and it heavily favours businesses that appear in articles, directories and structured content across the web.
If your business exists only on your own website, AI assistants have almost nothing to cite.
Fix it:
- Get mentioned in “best of” lists and directory articles (Clutch, GoodFirms, DesignRush)
- Publish content that answers specific questions your clients ask: FAQs, how-tos and case studies
- Add schema markup to your website so AI systems can parse your services accurately
- Create a Wikidata entry for your business (it is free, and it helps AI systems recognise your business as a real entity)
This discipline is called GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation. It is what SEO was in 2010: the businesses that figure it out early will own the top spots while competitors wonder why AI ignores them. How to Tell Which Reason Applies to You
Not every business not showing up on Google has the same problem. Match what you see in search to the most likely cause before you start fixing things.
- You do not appear on the map or in “near me” results. Start with Reason 1. Your Google Business Profile is probably unclaimed, unverified or half filled.
- Your business name brings up your website, but your service searches do not. That points to Reasons 2 and 3. Google knows you exist but has no reason to rank you for what you sell.
- Your website is less than a year old. That is Reason 4. Fix the basics and give it time.
- You rank on Google, but ChatGPT and Perplexity never mention you. That is Reason 5, and it needs a different set of signals.
- Nothing shows up anywhere, not even your name. Check that Google can index your site at all, using the quick tests in Reason 2.
Most owners find that two or three of these apply at once. That is normal. A business not showing up on Google rarely has a single cause, which is why the order of the plan below matters.
The 30-Minute Visibility Audit You Can Do Right Now
Before you fix a business not showing up on Google, find out exactly where you stand. This takes about 30 minutes.
- Google yourself properly. Search your business name. Then search your service plus city. Then search the problem you solve. Note where you appear, or do not.
- Check your Google Business Profile. Go to business.google.com. Is your listing claimed? Is it complete? Are the hours correct?
- Ask an AI about you. Open ChatGPT and ask: “Who are the best [your service] providers in [your city]?” Ask Perplexity the same. Does your business come up? Do your competitors?
- Check your backlinks. Go to the Ahrefs free backlink checker and enter your domain. How many websites link to you? If it is under 10, backlinks are your biggest gap.

Write down what you find. For a business not showing up on Google, that list is your starting point.
What to Fix First, in Order
Here is the order we recommend for any business not showing up on Google. Do one step per week and do not skip ahead.
- Week 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- Week 2: Fix your homepage title tag, meta description and main service page copy
- Week 3: Get listed on 5 business directories
- Week 4: Publish one blog post answering a question your clients ask
- Month 2: Start building for AI visibility: schema markup, FAQ content and a Wikidata entry

What Arjun Would Do in the First 30 Days
Back to Arjun, an owner with a business not showing up on Google. Here is how his four weeks could look if he followed the plan above for his HR consulting firm.
- Week 1: He claims his Google Business Profile, picks “Human resources consultant” as the main category, adds Hyderabad as his service area, uploads photos of his team and office, and replies to every review.
- Week 2: He rewrites his homepage title to “HR Consulting Services in Hyderabad” and replaces “We deliver excellence” with a plain description of who he helps and what he does.
- Week 3: He lists the firm on Justdial, Sulekha, Clutch and GoodFirms, using the same name, address and phone number everywhere.
- Week 4: He publishes one post answering the question clients ask him most: “How much does HR outsourcing cost for a 50-person company?”
None of this needs a big budget. It needs a business owner willing to spend a few focused hours each week. The first sign of progress is usually calls and direction requests from the Google Business Profile, followed by slower gains in website rankings. For any business not showing up on Google, that order is typical.
Mistakes That Keep a Business Not Showing Up on Google
Most of the damage comes from rushed shortcuts. These mistakes keep a business not showing up on Google for months:
- Stuffing keywords into your business name on Google Business Profile, which can get the listing suspended
- Creating a duplicate listing instead of claiming the one that already exists
- Using a different business name, address or phone number on every directory
- Buying cheap backlinks in bulk, which can hurt more than it helps
- Rebuilding the whole website every few months and throwing away the trust it had earned
How to Track Whether a Business Not Showing Up on Google Is Improving
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Any business not showing up on Google should set a baseline now and check it once a month.
- Google Search Console. It is free. Add your website, then check which searches show your pages and whether your pages are indexed. Start at Google Search Console.
- Google Business Profile performance. Your profile shows how many people found you, called you and asked for directions. This is usually the first number to move.
- A monthly AI check. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the same question about your service and your city once a month, and note whether your business is named.
- Your backlink count. Re-run the free backlink checker every quarter. Slow, steady growth is what you want.
Write the numbers in a simple sheet. After three months you will see which fixes are working and where to spend your next few hours.
FAQ
Why does my business appear on Google but not rank well?
Appearing and ranking are different. You may be indexed but ranking on page 8, where nobody looks. The fixes above (Google Business Profile, on-page SEO and backlinks) improve your ranking, not just your existence.
Is my business not showing up on Google because of my website or my listing?
Search your business name plus your city. If your Business Profile shows on the map but your website does not, it is a website problem (Reasons 2 to 4). If neither appears, start with Reason 1 and claim your Google Business Profile.
How long does it take to start showing up on Google?
Fixes for a business not showing up on Google work at different speeds. Google Business Profile changes show in 1 to 3 days. On-page SEO improvements typically take 4 to 12 weeks to affect rankings. Backlink building takes 3 to 6 months to show real impact. Patience is part of the strategy.
Does social media help my Google ranking?
Indirectly. Social media posts do not directly improve Google rankings, but they drive traffic to your website, increase brand searches and sometimes earn backlinks, all of which help.
What’s the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) gets you found on Google. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets you found on AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. In 2026, you need both. GEO is the newer discipline, and most businesses have not started yet.
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes, completely free. It is one of the highest-return things a small business can do, and it costs nothing but time.
Do I need to hire an agency to fix this?
Not for the basics. Fixing a business not showing up on Google starts with free steps. Google Business Profile, title tags and directory listings are things most business owners can do themselves with a few hours of focused effort. You need expert help for technical SEO, schema markup and GEO strategy, but start with the free basics first.
How do I check if my website is indexed by Google?
Type site:yourwebsite.com into Google. If pages from your site appear, they are indexed. If nothing appears, open Google Search Console, add your site and request indexing for your homepage. Also check that your WordPress search engine visibility setting is not blocking Google.
A business not showing up on Google is a signals problem, not a quality problem. Fix the signals, in order, and Google (and the AI assistants) will have a reason to recommend you.
Arjun’s story is an illustrative example based on situations we often see with Indian service businesses. The reasons and fixes above are what we recommend to clients at Grow Smart with AI.
